It’s not hyperbole to say that The Happening is possibly the worst mainstream film to ever grace the media. M. Night Shyamalan is well known for his supernatural plotlines and frequent use of twists; and The Happening may be the worst combination of his 2 stylistic choices. We know he can craft a well made movie, given his success with films such as Split and Unbreakable, and yet he still manages to produce a laughably misguided story filled with atrocious dialogue. Throwing in actors like Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel didn’t aid the final product in any way either. In fact, them being in the film just ended up putting duds in their otherwise solid careers. It would help if the story was at least somewhat plausible or executed well – but its lack of cohesive structure and the comical way its dramatic moments are played out is indicative of the overall quality of the film. The Happening is an unintentionally humorous movie and, instead of it being some profound supernatural thriller, it comes across as a lackluster feature from an otherwise good filmmaker.
