Cinemaster Score: 9/10
The Departed is one of the better flicks from Martin Scorsese’s extensive career. He has offered greats to the industry – especially in the crime genre – for decades. That being said, The Departed is a top-tier film and certainly a deserving best picture winner. It has a star-studded cast leading the way to success. Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio have solid performances that balance each other out well. Jack Nicholson’s antagonist role fits him perfectly; and Mark Wahlberg was evidently the perfect actor to be cast in his role. The film has a complex story to tell – one that, surprisingly, is relatively easy to keep up with. Although, The Departed is written in a way that demands your constant attention to pick up on small and important pieces of the story. Fortunately, the tension builds and is able to keep you on the edge of the seat. Plus, as a cherry atop the proverbial cake, the climax is unpredictable and shocking. The Departed is nearly a perfect Scorsese flick. Unfortunately, the very last scene breaks such perfection and holds the film back. By-and-large though, The Departed is an amazing watch and one that won’t soon be forgotten.
