Cinemaster Score: 9.5/10
Many were pleasantly surprised when Parasite won Best Picture at the Oscars this past year – especially considering that foreign films had previously never won the award in before it. However, upon watching it, it’s clear that Parasite is a near-perfectly constructed thrill ride that never ceases to amaze and surprise. From the beautifully written screenplay and mesmerizing performances, to the incredible direction of Bong Joon-ho; who weaves an incredible story unlike any other. If there was one major flaw with Parasite, it would be the lackluster experience that is the film’s end, which struggles to finish the plot in a satisfying manner. Besides that, there is virtually nothing wrong with the film – as it combines a plethora of genres into one expertly crafted piece of cinema while still managing to tell a cohesive story. Of course, some will find issue with reading subtitles over the course of a whole movie. Yet, the performances from actors Choi Woo-shik (Ki-woo), Park So-dam (Ki Jeong), Kang-Ho Song (Kim Ki-taek), and Jang Hye-jin (Choong-sook) are so incredible that you don’t even notice reading them anymore. Altogether, Parasite is clearly a cut above the rest in so many regards and is a near-masterpiece across the board.
