Cinemaster Score: 9.5/10
Marriage Story is one of the many surprises in film history. At the beginning of its year of release, if you had looked at the upcoming titles, surely Marriage Story would be overlooked. Yet, it doesn’t loom in the shadow of blockbuster epics such as Avengers: Endgame. Marriage Story is one of the most well-rounded and wonderfully crafted films in recent memory. The performances are impeccable – especially the leads (Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson). The film’s characters are complex and real due to a combination of the passionate embodiments from their respective actors as well as a script filled with believable dialogue. Its story is as simple as the title, but upon watching you’ll find a much deeper experience. Atop the strings it may pull in your heart, Marriage Story also includes phenomenal cinematography – every shot catching the eye. The film truly has it all to entertain; visual beauty, humor, love and loss, and it is a by-and-large artistic showcase for director Noah Baumbach. Marriage Story, put simply, is no film to underestimate as it is, in truth, a near-masterpiece.
